Residents of Stanmore, along with the Neighbourhood Wardens, the Police, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, A2 Dominion Housing, SERCO, and Winchester City Council’s Community Safety, Housing and Open Spaces teams came together to give an area of Stanmore a thorough Spring Clean.
The week long operation was spurred on as a result of residents highlighting issues they wanted addressed by the appropriate agencies; and what better way to do it than getting everyone together as part of one big partnership project.
The Neighbourhood Wardens led the event, and as part of the clean up offered residents in the highlighted roads a free bulky goods removal service to help less-able people dispose items they were unable to remove themselves. The Neighbourhood Wardens recycled items where possible, to either the Bar End recycling centre or Emmaus, a local charity that helps to rebuild the lives of homeless people. Neighbourhood Warden Hannah said "We were completely overwhelmed by the uptake of the bulky goods service, but were so pleased we could help so many people out". In total the Neighbourhood Wardens assisted around 30 residents, many of whom were elderly, by removing their unwanted bulky and awkward items.
As part of the event a community litter pick took place with many of the local children participating and involving staff from all the agencies. This gave the children the ideal opportunity to speak to their local Wardens, Police and Fire Service in a friendly, fun and safe environment.
Other activities that took place were a thorough jet washing of paving around blocks of flats, the repair of paving, an additional sweeping of the surrounding roads and the removal of graffiti.
